I am reaching out to you to ask for your opinion.

We are currently evaluating whether our owners would be interested in a full Autoland system for the VL3.  The system would function similarly to the Garmin Autoland system presented last year, meaning the aircraft would automatically take control in the event of pilot incapacitation.

In such a case, the system would set the transponder to an emergency squawk, manage ATC communications, navigate the aircraft to a suitable airport, land the aircraft, and shut down the engine after a full stop.  This option would be priced at EUR 25,000 on our price list.

My question is: if you were a new or returning buyer and saw this safety option on the price list, would you consider adding it?

We have recently become aware of potential safety issues regarding the Antigravity AG-1601 Lithium Battery which is installed in a high number of VL3 aircraft. The battery continues to be safe to use when properly managed, but can become unsafe in certain situations when improperly managed, especially battery use when battery power is low. This can occur when the battery is used extensively without corresponding charging.

1. Technical description

We recommend to change your start-up procedure to ensure the continued safety of your aircraft and battery. These procedures will be amended in your relevant POH. Under no circumstances should your aircraft engine be started with a low battery or started with jump leads or any type of similar external device.

2. Required provision

Check the battery before the flight:

Step 1: All switches in the OFF position
Step 2: Master switch ON (avionics master ON if necessary)
Step 3: ECU LANE A ON
Step 4: Emergency ECU ON
Step 5: Check the ECU voltage V (A) on G3X

Voltage values for the Antigravity AG-1601 Lithium Battery

1. ECU V (A) ≥ 12.5V Battery condition is good. The engine can be started.

2. ECU V (A) 11.5V – 12.5V Recharge the battery with a LiFePO4 or Lithium battery charger (Max 10 amps) before starting the engine.

3. ECU V (A) ≤ 11.5V Battery use is strictly prohibited. Turn OFF Master switch and charge the battery immediately with an approved charger. If proper voltage ≥ 12.5V cannot be reached at the end of charging process, replace the battery.

Step 6: Emergency ECU, ECU LANE A, MASTERS OFF

Recommendations:

It is mandatory to follow the instructions above to ensure the safety of your battery and aircraft. Your battery must be exchanged within the timescale recommended in the manufacturers manual to the new Lithium Iron Phosphate battery from Earth X (680C) which is also branded as the ETX680C for BRP-Rotax. This battery can be purchased direct from JMB Aircraft or from your local BRP-Rotax distributor.

We teach you how to handle emergencies, emphasizing that as long as your plane is still flying, you have time to solve the issue – no need to rush for the parachute.  But when the situation is beyond your skills, especially in bad weather, pulling the chute can save your life, and that’s what matters most.

The demo days will take place September 27-29 at Paluknys airfield (EYVP) near Vilnius.
